GOLF IN SPAIN – COURSES, RESORTS, PROPERTIES, HOLIDAYS, BREAKS AND WEEKENDS

valderrama.com

INTRODUCTION

Golf is now huge in Spain (there are currently 349 splendid courses) and it has been growing quickly ever since but really took off when Severiano Ballesteros came to fame in the mid 70’s.

He became World No. 1 and won 90 professional tournaments including 5 majors in his illustrious career.

Seve became a much admired Spanish sporting role model, perhaps not least because he avoided falling into the Tiger Wood’s trap of exploring a “bit of rough”! But sadly he died of brain cancer in 2011. Fortunately his compatriots, Sergio Garcia, Jose Maria Olazabal and more recently Jon Rahm have continued the exciting group of top Spanish golfers on the world tour.

Thanks to the wonderful climate Spain remains the leading destination for golf holidays, golf breaks and golf weekends for UK “aficionados”.

In this blog we will inform you of the top and most interesting golf courses and resorts in Spain, those with reasonable prices for green fees and how to book them.

We also advise some of the best portals for golf breaks, weekends and holidays, and how and where to get discount green fees.

And if you get hooked on the idea of golfing in Spain and decide to look at buying a golf property we will also discuss how, where and what to buy.

Are the courses open now in Spain with the Covid19 virus?

YES

The Spanish variant of the virus clearly understands that a bellowed “Fore” means get out of the way!

TOP COURSES IN SPAIN

Whilst many people say the best courses in Spain are located on the Costa del Sol, they tend to be quite expensive and since Spain boasts an abundance of top and challenging courses across the country you won’t be disappointed wherever you decide to tee off.

The Costa Blanca, Almeria, Murcia and Valencia have great courses at reasonable prices.

GOLF RESORTS AND HOTELS IN SPAIN

There are many golf hotels and resorts throughout Spain offering golf breaks and weekends and at these you can choose accommodation only, with golf reservations and tee times, fully inclusive or with flights, transfers etc all arranged for you.

While prices and services range from the cheap and basic to the absolute tops in pampered luxury there are simply too many options to list here, however, we have given a list of some that may be of interest and have proved popular with UK golfers: –

Desert Springs Golf Resort – Almeria

Bonalba Golf Resort – Alicante

Desert Springs Golf Resort – Almeria

Oliva Nova – Valencia

La Manga Las Lomas – Murcia

Hotel Alicante Golf – Alicante

Meliá Marbella Banus – Andalusia

GOLF HOLIDAY PACKAGES

You can book your golf break yourself if you prefer but there are so many good companies offering to arrange everything for you (and most likely cheaper than you can) that it’s not really worth the trouble.

They get great discount on green fees and accommodation, preferred tee times, cheap flights and airport pick up and transfers etc. –

Give these a try: –

Campbell Lamont Golf
Golf Travel
Golf Holidays Direct
Golf Breaks Spain

Maybe their main benefit is that you get to enjoy your holiday with others of a similar mindset and as they say, the only fit drinking partner for one, who has spent all day on the golf course, is another such.

Come on, admit it, you play an infinitely more skilful round in the bar!

BEST GOLF PROPERTIES IN SPAIN – VILLAS AND APARTMENTS FOR SALE

Because there are no agents specialising in golf properties in Spain, each golf resort sell their own and while some of the local estate agents in a given area will have a few golf properties in their portfolio, there is nowhere where you can find a good comparison of properties for sale in your selected region.

But if you need advice on what or where to buy the best golf properties, please feel free to contact us now by clicking on THIS LINK.

Below are a few of the developments currently offering golf properties for sale: –

Mirador del Golf – Sotogrande

Las Terrazas de la Torre Golf Resort – (Saurines)

Mar Menor Golf Resort.

La Serena Golf Resort.

La Manga Club

Altaona Golf & Country Club

GOLF SOCIETIES AND CLUBS

Something to be aware of is that club membership in Spain doesn’t necessarily come with free or reduced green fees so many ask “is it worth it”, however, each club or course has their own offers so you should check with the individual clubs to see the value or not.

Societies abound, however, and they each have their own access to deals on green fees so I am a member of one and we meet every 2nd Wednesday at various great courses in the area for a great 18 holes followed by prize-giving and lunch (Covid permitting).

Would you believe that two weeks ago I got 17 points on a relatively easy course but this week scored 40 on a more challenging links: –

I will never understand this game!
